Yarn Tastings!

What is a “yarn tasting”,  you ask?

Needlework Unlimited had some light snacks.

Needlework Unlimited had some light snacks.

It’s like a wine tasting, but with yarn. You bring your own hook or needle and get to sample a variety of different yarns. Some might be new to you, some might be old favorites that you are revisiting. Either way, it’s a great opportunity to test run some new yarns before you commit to enough for a project.

Each yarn tasting is a different as the store hosting it. Some have snacks. Some have door prizes. Some charge a small admissions fee. You’ll have to check with your local yarn store for those details.

We recently told the network of independent retails that stock our yarns that we’re ready to send out more yarn samples so they can host a tasting.

Over 150 stores responded! We had to cap the requests since our employees have to attend to their normal duties, too.

Here is a list of stores by state that will be receiving kits. We don’t know when they’ll be hosting their yarn tasting, so you’ll want to check with them directly for details. (I’ll try to update the list with dates if/when we hear.)

  1. Linda says:

The Wild Purls store you list as being in Missouri has an address of Billings, Montana. Bit of a drive for this country girl. :D

  2. Ann says:

Well, that’s not very helpful of me, is it? ;-)

I’ve removed the link until I can figure out the correct address.

  3. Julia Dawn Mason says:

I do not have a local yarn store here in Lakeland FL. My nearest yarn store is over in Winter Haven where I rarely go to. The places I have to buy yarn at are at JOANNS Fabrics, Michaels, and Hobby Lobby. The other place for yarn is my local Walmart. So most of my yarn purchases are bought online. My online yarn store is KnitPicks. Where else can I find 70 % alpaca and 30 % silk yarn for a reqasonable price? I check the clearance sales and get some real nice bargains . My shawls are knitted with KnitPicks yarn and every one who has seen them says they are beautiful and where did I find the yarn at.

    • Ann says:

      Hi Julia.
It’s a shame you don’t have an independently owned yarn store near you.
It’s a good reminder that local yarn stores are business like any other and need the support of area shoppers, otherwise they’ll close down.
Of course, that’s balanced by the store owner being responsible for creating a store that shoppers want to support.
The relationship is symbiotic! Hopefully you’ll get lucky and a good store will open in your area. :-)

  4. Lorinda says:

Wow! This is such a great idea, too bad non of the California shops listed are in the San Diego area. Boo hoo! I feel left out :(

  5. Lorinda says:

    Sorry, that should read “none”.
